Nokia N900 Dock / Cradle

I decided I wanted a vertical 'dock' for my N900 'cause I'm sick of having it littering my desk or having the screen inaccessible.

I managed to damage mine making this, so be warned… If I did it again, I'd do it differently.

I covered the device in clingfilm amd blu-tacked a 'cup' to the base of it. I also modified and bent a Nokia USB lead to a right-angle shape and cut away the outer skin from it.

With the mould assembled, I poured fibreglass resin into it and waited for it to set.

Two things I didn't anticipate - Fibreglass resin can find its way out of ANYTHING, which means I now have a phone with a screen that doesn't slide up and I will have to dismantle and clean - and when the resin sets in large masses, it gives of crazy amounts of heat, enough to damage the finish in the battery cover.

In future, the way to do this would be to cast a rubber mould of the phone bottom, and then use THAT to cast the resin one.

All that said though, the project was a success, and I have (after a little sanding) something that looks kinda like a rock with a USB lead stuck in it. I'm undecided as to wether I'll sand it flat on all sides, or if I'll just leave it rock-shaped and paint it.

The biggest problem? The n900 USB lead socket is on the wrong side of the screen, so it sits in the cradle upside down. Presumably this is nothing a bit of software couldn't fix though…
